Damage caused in the Caribbean by tropical storm Noel and heavy rainfall and flooding in Mexico is starting to be quantified.

Noel hit hardest in the Dominican Republic where it claimed more than 100 lives and caused damage estimated by the ministry of agriculture to “run into millions.”

In Mexico the province of Tabasco has been devastated with huge losses to citrus and banana crops.

And in Cuba, tropical storm Noel brought rainfall on a scale unprecedented in 44 years since the passage of hurricane Flora in 1963. Banana and vegetable production have been severely hit in the Ciego de Avila area with some 1,280ha under water at the height of the storm. There are no reported damaged to citrus export crops.
