As Christmas approaches and members across the industry prepare to optimise the final busy period of 2011, I am mindful of the challenges for each part of the supply chain, not least the UK weather, having just enjoyed the mildest November on record and comparing these fabulous temperatures to the freeze of last year.

Both extremes impact the growing season but the cold dramatically impacted other areas as our Scottish member James Forsythe at Coatbridge explained during our recent visit north of the border. Basking in glorious warm sunshine, we spent a fabulous morning touring this highly successful family business and learned of the impact of the freeze on site and on supply. Chatting to Graham Wallace and the tenants at Glasgow Wholesale Market early the following morning, we were impressed by the range of fabulous produce on show sourced from around the globe, and to view the innovative new composting initiative in operation. Add to this that we were served the finest produce in surrounding hostelries and we look forward to returning in 2012 with a team of members.

We have worked tirelessly this year on your behalf to influence decisions surrounding E. coli, high risk import inspections and other significant areas impacting your business and as we move forward towards 2012 I would ask you to reflect on the work that goes on behind the scenes providing a collective voice for the industry, bringing it together under one umbrella. We have a vital role to play, and although we have enjoyed significant industry support again this year - not least from our new board directors - I am keen to push further ahead in the new year.

We were delighted to host Margaret McKinlay, new chair of the Gangmasters Licensing Authority (GLA) board on a tour of a number of key members to provide an insight into the industry and the challenges surrounding temporary labour. FPC has maintained an interest in the GLA at board level since its inception and we were greatly encouraged by Margaret’s keen interest to understand our industry and listen to concerns face to face. Thanks to QV Foods, Manor Fresh and Fesa UK, and in December to Thanet Earth, Dole Fresh UK and Spitalfields Market, for providing an overview of different areas of the industry.

Our annual dinner with guest nation China is around the corner and tickets are selling fast, but just so there is no misconception I would make the point that there is no other event to match this in the industry - it is not a charity event, but rather a celebration of the industry, open to the whole industry. Specially designed cocktails, five courses of the very best fine dining with a Chinese influence, spectacular Chinese entertainment in the iconic Lancaster Ballroom, all at an amazingly competitive ticket price. Support the FPC and join the great and the good of the industry at this outstanding evening!

From all at the FPC - we wish you a very happy Christmas!-
