The Italian region of Veneto is placing its faith in a number of niche products.

Along with various fruit and vegetables these include a salad plant, radicchio. The region around Venice and Padua grows four varieties, all of which have been awarded the designation “geographically protected cultivation”.

They are grown in Treviso, Castelfranco, Verona and Chioggia. Radicchio from Treviso is regarded as a particular delicacy, and after being picked it is soaked in water at a temperature of 11 to 13 degrees C. The produce has been grown in Italy for 400 years.
