Justin King: told the issues in black and white

National Farmers’ Union Scotland (NFUS) met yesterday with Justin King, group chief executive of Sainsbury’s, in advance of his attendance at the Supermarket Summit hosted by first minister Alex Salmond.

The union used the opportunity to address issues such as the current loss in livestock numbers in Scotland, the promotion of local and seasonal produce and how food is labelled in stores.

Also under discussion were the demands of consumers and how best these can be met, as well as how best to raise awareness among consumers about the benefits of buying produce when it is in season.

James Withers, NFUS chief executive, said: “Regular contact with the major retailers is critical to ensure that they understand what needs to be done in order to secure future supplies of Scottish food and drink.

“However, it has taken on an added importance just now given the increasingly volatile environment we are operating in. For the first time in years, consumers are feeling the effects of a rise in food prices, however any increases in prices being paid to farmers has been matched or surpassed by spiralling input costs. At the same time, the latest agricultural statistics confirm a growing exodus of livestock from the hills.

“Most of our members are keen to work with the supermarkets and indeed the large retailers sell around 75 per cent of what Scottish farmers produce.

“However, we must continue to ensure that the food supply chain is as efficient and as equitable as possible and that farmers are able to work with the retailers to mutual benefit,” he added.
