The National Farmers' Union has welcomed today's review of London's wholesale markets as comprehensive and commercially aware.
Defra's independent report will be the subject of a three-month consultation. Among its recommendations is for the number of wholesale markets in the City to be reduced from five to three, but that these markets would have a broader remit to sell a wider range of fresh produce.
Commenting on the report, NFU vice president Michael Paske said: 'This review contains a huge amount of good work.
'It is important that the City's wholesale markets are not held back or put out of business by historic arrangements that prevent them serving today's changing trading needs.'
