NFU launches Manifesto for Horticulture

The NFU will launch its Manifesto for Horticulture at Horticulture in Focus 2004.

The manifesto sets out the priorities of the NFU’s Board for Horticulture as the specialist body representing growers. One of the key issues will be closer communication with all its members.

Crucial issues facing horticulture in the near future include pesticide use, employment, water, waste and energy and the Board will work hard to ensure growers’ interests are fairly represented.

The NFU Board for Horticulture will also work to develop a plant health strategy that recognises the threats posed by plant diseases, particularly to individual businesses.

Underpinning all the aims of the Board for Horticulture will be a strategic, market-oriented focus with the aim of expanding the market for horticultural products. Key elements to this include, public procurement, the continued 5-a-day promotion and establishing closer links with regional development agencies.

NFU chief horticulture adviser Phil Hudson said: “The NFU will be taking the initiative and driving the sector forward by providing a forum for all growers.

“Our intention is to represent our members at a British and European level to ensure fair treatment and enable the industry to drive forward in all its markets.”
