NFU elects potato chief

Tim Papworth has been elected as chairman of the National Farmer’s Union Potato Forum.

As chairman of the group, he will become vice-chairman on the national NFU horticulture board with specific responsibility for potatoes.

Papworth grows 12 varieties of potatoes on more than 650 acres and lifts a further 150 acres under contract at North Walsham, Norfolk.

He said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the role of chairman of the NFU Potato Forum and I look forward to representing the interests of potato growers in the industry.”

Papworth is joint managing director of LF Papworth Ltd, a the contract farming business which works on potato and vegetable production, marketing and livestock supply and selection.

The potatoes are marketed through a number of grower groups including McCain’s and Walkers. Last year the business was runner-up in the Farm Business ‘Family farm of the Year’ award.
