Morrisons: NFU praises the supermarket's sourcing model

Retailers could do more to strengthen ties with farmers and growers, according to a new report from the NFU.

The published findings of the NFU investigation, which looked into how the CSR of 10 major UK supermarkets impacted on farmers and growers, also recommends that chains strengthen their percentage of local sourcing.

Tom Hind, NFU's director of corporate affairs, explained: “Having good relationships with the UK’s grocery retailers is critical to the success of British agriculture and horticulture.”

The investigation praises Waitrose and Morrisons for both achieving 100 per cent UK sourcing.

Hind added: “All of the retailers we looked at could do more to establish clear baselines and targets that can be measured on policies such as sourcing. There is also room to highlight the role of Red Tractor Assurance schemes and to strengthen relationships with farmers across all sectors.”
