New Zealand will unveil its new horticulture strategy on July 22.
Growing a New Future will be launched at industry body Horticulture New Zealand’s conference next week and promises to be the most significant work done for New Zealand’s commercial fruit and vegetable industry for many years.
The plan aims to lead the NZ sector to its goal of an industry value of NZ$10 billion (£3.9bn) by 2020. This means doubling the size of the industry in 10 years.
The key aspect of the strategy is that New Zealand’s horticulture industry must grow if it is to survive by concentrating on developing international competitiveness in its major export markets and developing niche products for the premium end of those markets, as well as encouraging sustainability the length of the supply chain.
