Packing of the branded apple has begun in earnest

The 2010 New Zealand Jazz apple season is underway ,with Enza’s packhouse working at full capacity.

Growers in Nelson, Hawkes Bay and Central Otago have produced good volumes of the product, with packing beginning on 12 April.

The Royal Gala and Braeburn cross hit global markets six years ago and will be supported domestically by an extensive marketing campaign for its second year of being sold within New Zealand.

The brand will also be supported by mobile phone marketing, PR and sponsorship activity, including as a supporting sponsor of the 2010 World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro.

Enza spokesperson Campbell Naish said: “The international development and licensing of Jazz apples is an excellent example of a New Zealand company creating wealth through intellectual know-how and collaboration.

“On current forecasts, Jazz will deliver around $45 million (£20.8m) to New Zealand in export revenue, based on an export volume of 1.5m cartons of New Zealand-grown Jazz apples.

“The return to New Zealand flows back to growers, into apple research through royalties to Plant and Food Research, to suppliers and into consultants, packhouses and local logistics support. This is in addition to the creation of numerous employment opportunities for both New Zealand workers and seasonal employees from the Pacific Islands.”
