New water management advice

Growers can find out how to save money and the environment with an updated version of a water management guide.

Waterwise On The Farm gives farmers and land managers comprehensive information on preventing agricultural water pollution. The free booklet includes diagrams to show how water can flow around farms and catchments, with examples of potential pollution pathways.

“Using water more efficiently provides a win-win situation for farmers because it will save them money and benefit the environment,” NFU’s Anna Hall noted. “The booklet is full of practical advice and represents another tool in cutting back water usage at a time when its cost is increasing.”

This updated version will give the latest information on initiatives from rainwater harvesting to carrying out your own water audit. A recent NFU survey showed that 82 percent of farmers and growers were more aware of water efficiency than they were five years ago.

The book is said to give sound, practical advice on how farmers can make cost effective changes to reduce water use, save money and reduce pollution risks. It sets out tried and tested case studies by real farmers tackling real problems such as locating leaks, checking drains, installing extra pipe work and measuring water use. It also gives farmers the chance to think about different possibilities for saving water and what will work best on their own farms.
