Soft fruit breeder Redeva, a part of Redbridge Worldfresh has developed several new strawberry varieties for the UK, Europe and the Middle East.
New to be launched in the UK are varieties ‘Red Glory’ and ‘Red Princess’, which will be grown exclusively by The Summerfruit Company growers and sold to UK retailers.
Following on from the success of Red Delight and Red Merlin last winter, varieties which were developed for the Middle East, the new introductions have been bred specifically for the UK climate. Redeva reports that expectations are high for Red Glory and Red Princess to deliver a flavoursome experience to the consumer and favourable yields to the growers.
Consumer tests have indicated that the two new varieties offer a good shape and colour. Tasting trials also indicate that their flavour exceeds that of traditional industry varieties.
While new varieties are bred primarily with the consumer in mind, they can also offer significant benefits to growers. Both Red Glory and Red Princess are early-producing strawberry variants, which produce yields of a higher quality fruit in comparison to other industry available varieties.
