Tesco is claiming a UK supermarket first with the launch of frozen pomegranate, beetroot, watermelon and coconut.
The supermarket says the new lines, which are regarded as on trend but difficult to prepare, will help shoppers cut down on food waste in the home.
All of the new frozen products come in resealable packs. The beetroot and coconut are already diced, while the watermelon is in chunks and the pomegranate is seeded. It follows the launch of the UK's first peeled and halved frozen avocados in Tesco 18 months ago.
Pomegranate seeds have become popular in salads and tagines, coconuts are being used as a substitute for sugar in Asian cooking, beetroot is featuring in salads, smoothies and even cakes, and watermelon appears in smoothies and salads.
“Anyone who’s ever tried getting the seeds out of a pomegranate to add outstanding flavour to a salad or tried breaking open a coconut will know how fiddly it can be,' saidTesco frozen food buyer Marianne Aitken. “Our new frozen range is a delicious and hassle-free way to help assemble that eye-catching dish.
“Frozen fruit options are becoming increasingly popular with shoppers, who are looking for simple ways to eat a wide range of fruits, without the preparation time associated with fresh varieties.”
The launch also ties in with Tesco's commitment to help halve all food waste by 2025, and the range was welcomed by WRAP director Dr Richard Swannell.“This could really help consumers reduce edible household food waste as they can simply defrost and use as and when required,” he said.
