Sharpak's new innovative production line

A new innovation allowing 100 per cent recycled materials to be used for food trays is being rolled out commercially for the first time.

UK company Sharpak Interpak has invested £3 million in the unique technology, which negates the need for techniques such as using a virgin capping layer or extensive cleaning.

Sharpak is one of the UK’s biggest designers and manufacturers of thermo-formed rigid packaging for both food and non-food use.

Covered by robust certification and meeting all EU legislative requirements for food contact, this is the first technology of its kind in the UK, says Sharpak.

Sharpak is able to extrude over 25,000 tonnes of metal per annum at its Bridgwater, Somerset site, increasing its position in the market.

Frank Coleman, site director at Bridgwater, said: “Giving a gross output of 1,500kg per hour, the line will produce sheet from 150 micron to 1.2mm in thickness, all controlled with the latest die technology”.

The packaging will retain the traditional qualities of Amorphous Polyethylene Terephthalate (APET) in terms of clarity and pack integrity, providing the robustness required for modern packing and processing lines and the same effective barrier needed to protect and preserve food from damage or contamination.

The company operates from three British Retail Consortium approved sites in Aylesham, Kent, Bridgwater, Somerset and Yate near Bristol.
