New strawberries unveiled

East Malling Research has unveiled details of two new June-bearing strawberry varieties from its breeding programm. ‘Amelia’ and ‘Sallybright’ will be launched at this year’s Fruit Focus event.

‘Amelia’, formerly EM1103, is a late season variety, which crops 12-15 days later than Elsanta, according to EMR. It is said to produce attractive, mid red coloured, regular shaped berries, which have good firmness and have an excellent shelf life. It is being pitched as an alternative to Florence due to its late cropping season, improved shelf life and berry colour.

Meanwhile ‘Sallybright’, which has previously been known as EM1296, crops slightly earlier than Elsanta and produces very regular shaped berries, which have an excellent flavour. The berries are described as juicy, with an attractive, glossy, red to deep red colour.

EMR believe that Sallybright will particularly appeal to PYO and direct market growers, but does not consider it to be suitable for marketing through multiple retailers.
