The City of London Corporation has selected Nigel Shepherd as the new superintendent of New Spitalfields Market.

Shepherd, currently working for the BBC as a change programme manager, will take up the role on Monday, December 7.

The appointment follows the tragic death of former superintendent Ken Alexander this summer.

David Smith, director of markets at the City of London Corporation, said: “There was a large response to the job advertisement, which produced a very strong shortlist and gave the selection panel the welcome, but difficult, task of choosing between some very high-quality candidates.”

Shepherd has previously worked in the City’s markets department as the project and support manager.

Smith said: “Nigel has an excellent understanding of how markets in general operate, and of New Spitalfields in particular, where he has previously helped initiate and implement improvement projects. As well as excellent knowledge of wholesale markets, he brings with him broad management experience, an incisive and analytical mind, a clear understanding of the need for balance in the relationship between landlord and tenants, enthusiasm for promoting the market, and genuine concern for people’s welfare.

“The City is delighted to welcome him back and the announcement of his selection was greeted very warmly in the market.”
