Councillor Masood Ahmad, mayor of Waltham Forest, braved freezing conditions to turn on the Christmas lights at New Spitalfields market last Friday.

The Spitalfields Market Tenants’ Association donated £500 to charity at the event. Spitalfields Market later had a stall at a fair at Smithfield Market in aid of St John Ambulance, with Christmas trees, poinsettias, wreaths and seasonal fruit and vegetables on offer.

All the money raised on the night by the tenants’ association is to be donated to the St John Ambulance fund.
