The Soil Association and Organic Farmers & Growers have approved a new soil conditioning product for organic growers.

TwinN is a freeze-dried biological alternative to traditional nitrogen fertilizers which can be used as a complete or partial replacement for chemical nitrogen, containing naturally occurring microbes extracted from plants which are cultivated in a laboratory and then freeze-dried.

According to the company, the product works by converting atmospheric nitrogen into a form that is easily available to plants. The micro-organisms are multi-functional working both within the plant and around the root zone.

According to the Soil Association, the fertiliser has little impact on the environment, unlike chemically sourced nitrogen that uses fossil fuel in its manufacture. They added that it is a soil improver, and will be of ‘great benefit’ to anyone who wants to reduce their use of chemical nitrogen and those commited to sustainable agriculture.

The product ‘will help’ conventional growers who are in the process of organic conversition by building fertility in depleted soil without the need to take an area out of production.
