Liverpool city council's chief executive said the decision to allow the redevelopment highlights the city's economic recovery. "This was a gleam in our eyes five years ago... and to get planning permission is extraordinarily quick. Liverpool is playing catch up after 30 years of lack of investment. Now we have everything in place for the city to regain its place as a premier shopping centre."

The northern city hopes to copy the success of Birmingham which rose onBritains' best shopping centre league tables since the completion of the £500m BullRing retail development.

The Paradise Street development in Liverpool should see the city move from 12 to four in the regional league tables upon completion. The development will be managed by Grosvenor Estates and will include three department stores, two hotels, a bus station and parking for 3,000 cars, creating over 4,000 jobs.
