New Reuben blackberry launches

Nursery soft-fruit stock supplier Hargreaves Plants’ new Reuben blackberry is expected to make its debut on retail shelves in the next two weeks.

A super sweet berry with brix levels of 10 to 14, the variety is a late season primocane bred by the University of Arkansas and ideal for fresh rather than culinary uses.

“Reuben is good-sized and fruits on first-year cane unlike standard blackberries which only crop in year two,” said Jonathan Brown, of Hargreaves. “Because of its taste it is really targeted at the high-end retail market.”

The plants are very attractive to growers because of the potential to double crop with spring floricane and their upright growth habit.
