US researchers have developed a new red grape to fill the gap between Flame Seedless and Crimson Seedless. Scarlet Royal red seedless has been developed by scientists at the Agricultural Research Service’s San Joaquin valley research station. The grape has now received a US patent and is ready for commercial vineyards. Young vines have already been planted in California although they will not be in commercial production for a few more years. Scarlet Royal ripens in the state during mid-August after Flame and before Crimson.

The new grape has dark-red skin and translucent pale yellow-green flesh and has been possible thanks to pioneering embryo-rescue techniques developed by ARS’s David Ramming.
