The supermarket has worked with Stourgarden, ProPrint Group and Ravenwood Packaging on the range
Tesco has launched a new recyclable packaging format for its Finest Onions range.
The packaging, supplied by ProPrint Group, is a kerbside-recyclable linerless format that supports Tesco’s 4Rs strategy (Remove, Reduce, Reuse. Recycle) as set out in its annual packaging report.
The launch of the new Tesco Finest Extra-Large Onions and Finest Rosanna Pink Onions packs comes as part of Tesco’s commitment to “helping make recycling simple and easy for customers”.
Onion supplier Stourgarden and Tesco chose ProPrint Group and applicator expert Ravenwood Packaging to deliver the linerless solution, which aims to deliver both an upscale appearance and practical functionality.
The linerless lid features intricate honeycomb cut-outs, allowing customers to view the product clearly while maintaining a premium feel. The reinforced cartonboard tray ensures produce is protected while offering convenience for both storage and recycling at home.
Another key feature of the comprehensive solution is the speed and precision of Ravenwood’s Nobac 5000L, a high-performance applicator. The machine’s ability to meet aggressive lead times and maintain application standards was critical to achieving the targets set by Stourgarden, according to the company.
The initial launch of the Tesco onion packs is being trialled across five Tesco depots, with plans to roll out the format to all Tesco depots in 2025. As the project progresses, the pack will undergo further refinements, with the aim of rolling it out on a national scale as part of Tesco’s long-term packaging goals.
For the two Tesco Finest Onions lines, the linerless solution is forecast to eliminate 3.7 million pieces of plastic packaging that are not currently recyclable at the kerbside.
The move follows successful similar initiatives, such as the move to linerless packaging for Zespri Gold Kiwi, as well as cardboard punnets for Tesco Mushrooms.
