A potato widely associated with the Irish Famine in the 1840s has been revived by Glens of Antrim Potatoes.

The Irish Lumper, a nutritional knobbly shaped potato, has been cultivated from a handful of rare seedings by the Nothern Ireland-based specialist grower.

The potato was recently sampled to customers of Selfridges during its Delicious Ireland event and Antrim Potatoes now have plans to put it back in supermarkets nationwide as part of a new ‘Heritage’ range.

Michael McKilliop, Glens of Antrim managing director, said: “We’ve been working for five years to produce a crop of Irish Lumpers which told the story of the potato’s history and heritage, and we were delighted with this first commercial crop.

“The feedback from customers has been amazing so far and we will definitely be introducing the Irish Lumper into our product range later in the year.”
