The Scottish Agricultural College (SAC) has appointed a new senior potato consultant.

Matt Smallwood will be based at SAC’s Perth Office and work closely with former incumbent Dr Stuart Wale, who continues to work for SAC on a reduced-days basis.

Smallwood will co-ordinate activity with the other members of the SAC Potato Team including Ruiaridh Bain, Daan Kiezebrink, Mark Ballingall, Andy Evans as well as the Potato Crop Clinic.

Smallwood returns to SAC after eight years working for Dundee-based firms Taypack and Cygnet PB, his present employer.

Ian Riddell, who manages specialist services for SAC believes the appointment further strengthens SAC’s potato team.

Riddell said: “Matt brings a wealth of experience in the potato industry including consultancy to the seed and ware sectors in the UK and overseas, management of breeding programmes, tendering and managing R&D projects and presenting at industry events.”

Smallwood, a Harper Adams University College graduate, said: “I am delighted to return to SAC to lead the SAC Potato team in partnership with Stuart Wale. I want to continue to develop and evolve R&D, Knowledge Transfer and consultancy services to meet the current and future requirements of all sectors of the potato industry.”
