Two of Britain’s biggest potato companies, potato breeder Cygnet PB and seed potato exporter Pan European Potatoes, have merged to form a new business.

Cygnet PEP aims to deal with the increased international demand for Scottish seed potatoes, and business activity will be focused on exporting.

Due to be officially unveiled at the World Potato Congress in Edinborough in June, the new company will start trading from August 1.

“Aligning the country’s largest breeding programme with a global name in seed exports makes sound commercial sense and will allow us to grow seed exports and variety sales,” says Cygnet PB managing director Alasdair MacLennan.

Cygnet PEP have projected tonnage turnover to topple 25000Mt of seed potatoes during the first year of trading.
