The development of a new variety which could extend the pomegranate season considerably is to be unveiled at the annual international agricultural exhibition Agro Mashov in Israel.

Professors at Ben Gurion University of the Negev in southern Israel have recently finished the first stage of an ongoing research to develop the new variety of pomegranate.

They are said to ripen as early as July and August, earlier than the traditional September and October season. The new pomegranates have a deep red color, strong taste and soft grains and offering growers a new option.

Professor Zeev Weisman from the Phyto-Lipid Biotechnology Lab has been presiding over development of the pomegranate: "We promote and assist several producers and small industries in the south with the sophisticated development of natural pomegranate products of all parts of the fruit, juice and oil”.

More information about the pomegranates and other new developments will be presented at the Innovation Booth at the 19th Agro Mashov exhibition taking place on January 14-15, in Israel.
