New pea research revealed

French scientists have developed a technique that has produced the most detailed reference collection of pea plant mutations. The results, published in the journal Genome Biology, are from a study at the French National Agricultural Research Institute (INRA) and provide a tool for seed breeders with which to investigate the genetics of peas and other legumes.

The research will also be of help when producing new pea varieties in the future, by both genetic engineering and by conventional breeding. “By opening [this database] to the community, we hope to fulfil the expectations of both crop breeders and scientists, who are using the pea as their model of study,” said Abdelhafid Bendahmane, co-ordinator of the research.
