New onion makes a difference at JS

Sainsbury’s has launched a new speciality onion under its premium Taste the Difference range.

Borretane onions have been sourced in Italy and are now on sale in around 100 of the retailer’s stores, said senior buyer Russell Crowe, (pictured). “It has a very pungent taste when it is raw and is ideally roasted. It’s widely used in Italy, with smaller onions being used for pickling,” he said.

The retailer is also hoping to grow the onion in the UK, but said initial trials had not been promising. “We had attempted to grow it in Bedfordshire, but unfortunately the crop failed. We’re not sure what caused it yet, but I’m confident next year we’ll have UK produce.”

Sainsbury’s will monitor the onion’s performance over the next few weeks, but Crowe hopes for eventual 12-month availability in all stores.
