Darren Henaghan has been named as the new managing director of Borough Market.
Henaghan was unveiled this week by the market’s trustees as the replacement for Keith Davis, who is retiring at the end of September. Henaghan takes up his new post on 1 October.
Davis was credited with overseeing the successful delivery of major projects including the reopening of Three Crown Square, the opening of the Market Hall and a strengthening of the market’s commitment to sustainable food production, waste reduction and community outreach.
Henaghan joins Borough Market from his current role as director of environment for the London Borough of Ealing. After training as a civil engineer, Henaghan launched a career in local government, first with Barking and Dagenham, then Thurrock. Over the past 18 years, he has built a reputation as a specialist in place-based development programmes, including the delivery of environmental services and affordable housing.
Born and raised on a beef farm in Staffordshire, Henaghan has also worked as a trustee of Waste Watch, an environmental charity, and held a series of government advisory roles covering food safety and other regulatory matters.
Donald Hyslop, chair of the Trustees of Borough Market, said: “As a long-term resident of south-east London, with a track record in public service across several London boroughs, Darren has gained an acute understanding of the community that this market is here to serve.
“It is this, paired with his considerable experience of managing major projects on behalf of multiple stakeholders, that gives us confidence in his ability to work alongside the market’s staff, trustees and traders to sustain the progress that has been made under Keith Davis’ stewardship over the last five years.
“As the trustees of this world -renowned food institution, we are extremely grateful to Keith for the work he has put in over the past five years. We are confident that with Darren’s leadership Borough Market will continue to thrive for many years to come.”
Henaghan added: “Borough Market is a microcosm of what makes me so proud to be part of London. It brings together the best produce from around the world and like London itself, is the very essence of creativity, pride and diversity.I am looking forward to playing my part in itscontinued growth and success.”
