New Zealand crown research body Scion has spivved up Zespri’s plastic kiwifruit utensil to produce the Biospife.
The new tool is made using waste kiwifruit, including pulp, skin and hairs; flecks of the furry green fruit give the Biospife its appealing natural look.
Incorporating Biospives into retail packs rather than the plastic alternative could trim Zespri’s carbon footprint by a wholesome three per cent. Although not yet commercially available, Scion’s work shows there is a use for the thousands of tonnes of kiwifruit waste that are dumped each year and could now be used to make a host of innovative products.
