Smith grew up in Lincolnshire on her family's farm. She said much of her creative imagination came from adventures on the farm with her sister as a child. After spending six years as a border at Harrogate Ladies College, where free time was restricted, Smith said she created her own entertainment, resulting in her fascination for adventure.
