New EU import controls for high-risk products, including bananas and mangoes from the Dominican Republic and some vegetables from Thailand, come into force on January 25 next year.

The European Commission has identified the products as having pesticide residue concerns and they will be subject to increased controls.

The Food Standards Agency has been charged with developing the measures that the UK will apply to enforce the regulation. The Fresh Produce Consortium is already raising a number of issues, including how products get placed on the list and the processes for review.

Those lines from Thailand that will be covered by the regulation are yard-long beans, aubergines and brassicas. Turkish peppers, courgettes and tomatoes are also considered high risk.
