The climate is right for the fresh produce industry to move forward

Jenney: significant potential

Jenney: significant potential

As reported on freshinfo on Tuesday, Nigel Jenney is the new chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC).

The managing director of Univeg will take up the high-profile role with the UK’s trade association, on May 4, replacing Doug Henderson, who will retire after leading the FPC since its inception 12 years ago.

Jenney told the Journal that, whilst the FPC provides an excellent service to its members, there are significant opportunities to develop the organisation, for the benefit of its members.

“The objective is to maintain and enhance the services that are already offered to members, both generically and by sector, whilst clearly understanding the needs of the membership and proactively developing real business opportunities.

“The FPC must continue to provide exceptional value, whilst identifying and promoting complimentary services for the long-term benefit of the organisation and members.”

Jenney moves into the role at a difficult time for the industry. However, he believes the political and social climate in the UK is ripe for the fresh produce industry to re-establish its stability. “While sections of the fresh produce industry are clearly under great pressure, we must all actively be seeking potential areas for development,” he said. “Consumer awareness of healthy eating offers this industry a real chance for growth - the FPC can give commercial support through the creation of strategies that address the needs of the membership and the opportunities and challenges being faced in the marketplace.”

In the next few months Jenney will work with Henderson on FPC strategy including overseas issues. Jenney said: “Our global influence is of great importance, we have an international membership and Doug has done a tremendous job representing all member interests.

“I intend to continue the excellent work of the FPC within the fresh produce sector and look forward to actively promoting the ongoing success of the industry.”
