A new filtration machine claims it can extend the British cabbage season by up to eight weeks.

The Fresh Pod EC 3+ filtration unit works with existing air circulation systems to scrub the air of ethylene gas - a compound naturally given off by cabbages and an accelerant of the ripening process.

Cabbage supplier Lankfer has already incorporated the EC 3+ at its Wisbech premises and the company believes the product could be a game-changer.

Lee Parker, commercial director at Lanfker said: “Since installing the product we’ve been able to supply our customers with an English cabbage for an extended period of eight weeks, giving us more control over the supply chain, part of which is removing the need to rely on a foreign source.

“The unit will support home-grown produce and help us cut costs for suppliers.”

The Fresh Pod EC 3+ system also claims to eradicate invisible airborne spores and moulds that contribute to increased wastage.

Valerie Bullard, director at Fresh Pod, added: “The fresh produce industry currently has many economic challenges coupled with the pressure to contribute to a greener planet, I believe our system can help to ease both of these concerns."
