The House of Commons select committee has put the future of New Covent Garden Market under review.

A review of the provision of wholesale markets in London is being recommended by the Commons select committee on agriculture.

Former Albert Fisher director Nick Saphir, who quit the firm after its change of management which led to the firm's downfall, has been signed to undertake the review.

A highly-respected member of the industry, Saphir is now a consultant to several large food companies in the US, South America and Europe. He has been asked by Corporation of London and Defra chiefs to produce a report by the end of September.

Saphir will be expected to deliver key facts and comment on whether or not the London markets are well adapted to the needs of business communities and users which they serve.

The review will also look at the effects governing legislation have on the markets, potential impacts of product diversification, changing demand for services provided by wholesale markets and the scope for developing a co-ordinated strategy for the markets' future management.

Comment from Saphir and more on the story on freshinfo next week.
