McDonald's healthier options were working for Bell

McDonald's chief executive Charlie Bell has stepped down to focus on fighting cancer, the second boss to leave the post in seven months.

Bell was diagnosed with the disease shortly after taking over at the fast food giant from Jim Cantalupo, who died suddenly of a heart attack in April.

Jim Skinner, who has worked for the company for 33 years, will assume the top job.

Bell’s short tenure was a successful one. McDonald's has seen its switch to a menu with healthier options - including a greater range of salads and fruit - pay off recently with the three months to September bringing a 42 per cent rise in earnings.

He will remain chairman of the board, the company said.
