Directors at the eastern-Spanish fresh produce supply giant Anecoop have appointed former deputy chairman Juan Vicente Safont Ballester as the new chairman of the board following the death of José Miquel Borras earlier this month.

Safont has been an Anecoop board member since 1998 and is chairman of the Colcani co-operative. He worked very closely with Miquel before his death and had gradually been assuming more responsibility of the day-to-day running of the company during Miquel's illness.

Safont is known as a unifying force within Anecoop, which is a union of co-operatives itself. His main goal is to continue to implement strategic change instituted in 2001within the group to bring about change within the Anecoop structure and get members to work more efficiently together in terms of production and management in order to improve competitiveness of the group. He will also be focusing on acquiring some 400ha in southern Spain to complement Anecoop's existing supply base.
