Fresh produce industry stalwart Jon Morgan joined NHS Supply Chain as senior buyer for produce on Monday, with responsibility for the School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme.
He takes over from Gareth Jones, who has become the food lead at the department of children, schools and families (DSCF).
Morgan brings with him 25 years' experience across a broad range of businesses in the trade, from production and wholesale to import, foodservice and retail. He became interested in the industry as a teenager when he entered his father’s business George Bates Ltd, where he developed his passion for the industry.
Since those early days, Morgan has worked for a number of companies including JJ Fresh Produce Ltd, Norman Olversons t/a Red Velvet, Sydney Hart Ltd, ASDA/International Produce Limited, 3663 Swithenbank, Jupiter Marketing Ltd and Tesco.
He said: “I have worked with some great individuals from several sectors of the industry who have shared their knowledge and expertise. I enjoy value engineering and I strive to remove unnecessary costs from the supply chain where possible.”
His appointment demonstrates the importance the NHS Supply Chain places on knowledge of the trade and the economics that drive it.
Keith Hinchcliffe, trading manager for NHS Supply Chain said: “We are delighted that Jon has decided to join us and brings with him an extensive knowledge of the produce industry. Jon will add great value to both us and the wider supply base, by ensuring that we continue to drive forward standards in customer excellence and have a greater degree of engagement with the produce supply base.”
