Paul Bulcke, the chief executive of Nestlé, has been named as the keynote speaker for the 2013 City Food Lecture.

Next year’s event will take place at London’s Guildhall on 25 February, and Bulcke’s lecture will address how global companies must face up to the challenge of resource scarcity, and water shortages in particular.

His speech will be follow by a Q&A session hosted by BBC radio host Sheila Dillon, and will feature a panel of food industry specialists. They are Professor Ian Boyd the recently appointed chief scientific advisor to DEFRA; Peter Marks, CEO of The Co-operative; and Carl Atkin, the head of research and consultancy at KinnAgri.

The annual City Food Lecture is organised by the seven City livery companies, including the Fruiterers, and is attended by 600 prominent food industry figures.

Organising committee chairman Laurence Olins said: “We are delighted to have Mr Bulcke as our guest speaker. The challenge faced by us all of declining water resources is critical and as an industry one we cannot afford to ignore. I look forward to welcoming Mr Bulcke to our lecture and hearing the views of someone responsible for leading the world’s largest food company.”
