Two researchers from the New Economics Foundation are seeking a meaningful definition of the term “seasonal food”.

Jim Sumberg and Lindy Sharpe have written a short paper, asking “Is it possible to find a meaningful definition of the term ‘seasonal food?’”

They have taken as the starting point for their discussion DEFRA’s definition of locally in-season food, which states that: “Locally in-season food is: food that is outdoor-grown or produced during the natural growing or production period for the country or region where it is produced. It need not necessarily be consumed locally to where it is grown. This applies to seasonal foods produced both in the UK and overseas.”

The NEF paper explores the ambiguity of “outdoor-grown” and “natural growing period” and sets out a series of criteria which could be used to decide whether a food is seasonal or not.

The Fresh Produce Consortium is inviting views on the debate and is inviting its members and the wider industry to get in touch. Further information from infor@freshproduce.org.uk
