Natures Way Foods has been awarded the ISO 50001 international standard.

The certification, which recognises best practices in energy management, complements NWF’s ISO 14001 accreditation, which it achieved in 2001.

Richard Parr, chief operating officer at Natures Way Foods, said: “We were one of the first UK food producers to obtain the ISO 14001 standard and are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact and energy consumption. This year, we wanted to achieve the ISO 50001 so we could measure and monitor our energy usage to an international standard.

'Having this certification will help us to invest in the right areas of the business over the next several years, with the aim of achieving the 2020 climate change target by 2016.”

Over the course of the last six years, Natures Way Foods has improved its water efficiency by 40 per cent, and energy efficiency by 30 per cent.

Energy reductions across the business have included upgrading fridge plants for energy efficient ammonia plants and the installation of energy efficient air compressors and air conditioning units in the site offices.

The business is investing over £130,000 in reducing its carbon footprint this year, with a further £250,000 investment earmarked for next year. Future improvements will include the installation of a new LED lighting system, which is scheduled to be fitted in the Runcton site at the end of this year, and across all other sites next year, providing a further 10 per cent reduction.
