Nature and so much more

Founded in 1990 by Volkert Engelsman and Willem van Wijk, Eosta BV is a rapidly expanding company, involved in organic fruit and vegetables. As a dedicated organic marketing company it is also involved in the entire chain from cultivation, pre packing and distribution, with a core business of greenhouse salad crops and overseas fruits.

Supplies come from organic growers across the globe, while sales are concentrated in Europe, the US and the Far East. Eosta supplies both speciality natural food outlets and conventional supermarkets with fresh, daily deliveries.

Founded on the principle that economy and ecology are invariably connected. Eosta’s corporate objective is to contribute to commercial as well as ecological and ethical values in the global market for certified organic agricultural products.

Eosta offers a wide range of fresh fruits and vegetables, both branded under its own Nature & More label, unbranded or under the private label of its customers. All products are fully certified as organically and/or biodynamically grown to official national and international standards, such as Demeter, SKAL, KRAV and EKO and the company is a corporate associate of IFOAM.

Eosta’s products are guaranteed to meet the EU minimum requirements for organic agriculture, but often exceed these. Additionally, Nature & More branded product lines are monitored according to the Nature & More Quality Policy, and assigned a farming quality, a social quality, and a food quality rating.

Eosta’s exclusively organic and standard-setting HACCP and BRC approved prepacking facilities, combined with its advanced tracking programme, guarantee complete quality assurance and Eosta provides farmers and growers around the world with organic agronomists free of charge. Eosta maintains a close working relationship with organic research institutions, such as Dutch Louis Bolk Institute and the Universities of Kassel and Copenhagen. The fields of expertise within the Eosta advisory programmes are:

•Soil management and compost

•Bio-control of pests and diseases

•Post-harvest technology

•Seed breeding

•The use of compost teas

•Cultivation techniques

Eosta believes that although retailers and marketers have made many attempts to define quality, it is ultimately the consumer who decides whether the quality of a certain product is acceptable and satisfies certain needs. Nature & More strives to continually increase transparency, mutual awareness and shared responsibility of all stakeholders in the food supply chain with regards to food quality, ecology and social justice.

Because of the different crops they produce and the different regions they grow in no Nature & More grower is like another but they all adhere to an organic system of food production, often doing more than complying with regulations to produce healthy fruit and vegetables.

The reasons why Nature & More growers choose to produce organically are also varied, but they all share a concern for the environment and are well aware that their farm represents a complex system that is interdependent with the larger environment. By creating or maintaining an environment for a wide population of plant and animal species, they help establish a natural balance of living organisms, which benefits their farms in the long run.

The most common form of recycling on the farm is composting. Simply allowing waste material to decompose may cause nutrients to leach into the soil or escape into the air but organic farmers can prevent this pollution by adhering to a controlled method of composting, which, instead of just breaking down waste, creates a stable combination of materials and micro-organisms. Proper composting also reduces pests and diseases and has a neutralizing effect on toxic substances. Waste reduction and recycling is not limited to driving fuel-efficient vehicles or collecting scrap metal or paper for re-use. An increasing number of growers utilise irrigation systems that allow them to minimise water usage or make use of alternative sources of energy.
