The British Potato Council (BPC) is urging potato suppliers to start thinking about playing a part in National Chip Week 2007 from February 12-18.

The theme for National Chip Week 2007 - Chips, A National Treasure - will hold up the chip as a national icon.

The BPC campaign will feature an attempt to set five records in five days, including the ‘most portions of chips wrapped in a minute’, the ‘biggest bag of chips’ and the ‘longest chip’.

The promotional week is a great opportunity for the potato industry to raise awareness about its products, according to the BPC.

Caroline Evans, BPC marketing executive, said: “Everybody loves chips and National Chip Week is a superb opportunity to increase sales. To help raise awareness of the week we have free lorry stickers for the potato industry to display. What’s more, we’ve also produced special recruitment flyers for suppliers of fish and chip shops to pass on.”

The BPC will also encourage suppliers that deal with potatoes suitable for chipping to use its artwork to create a Chip Week pack sticker to show consumers how to make oven chips.

Evans added: “The record attempts will add real excitement and hopefully get the whole country talking about chips.

“Other activities planned for National Chip Week include the creation of three new delicious chip recipes by celebrity chef Ed Baines. And to help spread the word that chips can be enjoyed as part of a healthy balanced diet we will be releasing a number of fun facts.

“We’re hoping to receive as much support as possible, from suppliers displaying their lorry stickers to recruiting customers and even getting involved with the record attempts. Last year, activity surrounding the week achieved £2.75m worth of positive coverage but we hope to beat this in 2007 - an opportunity you cannot afford to miss!”
