Mushroom site doing it for the kids

The Mushroom Bureau has launched a new website for schools and colleges to educate students about mushrooms.

Learning about growing cultivated mushrooms, students can access the website for information on all six stages of the farming cycle from composting to harvesting. Information is illustrated using photographs from an East Anglian mushroom farm and captions.

Teachers can download a primary school project sheet for Key Stage 2 pupils can be and a GCSE Study Card can also be obtained for Key Stage 4 Food Technology students, which is cross-referenced to a Nutrition & Health section on the website.

The bureau says it hopes that once their interest in mushrooms in stimulated, web-browsing students can research mushroom meals from the site’s recipe archive: “www.mushroom-uk.com is well researched, straightforward, and does not take ages to download without broadband,” said Victoria Lloyd-Davies of the mushroom bureau: “Its aim is to educate the next generation of consumers and to stimulate their palates to eat more mushrooms, more vegetables and more nutritious meals,”
