The managing director of Budgens and Londis owner Musgrave Retail Partners GB has departed in a tumultuous week for the convenience store sector.

Phil Smith’s resignation from Musgrave, following a boardoom reshuffle, follows the news that Spar UK managing director Jerry Marwood is to step down as boss of the convenience retailer earlier next summer on Wednesday.

Smith has worked at Somerfield and Kraft Foods and joined from the Camelot Group where he was commercial and operations director in 2007.

As part of a boardroom shake-up, Donal Horgan, currently managing director of SuperValu and Centra in the Republic of Ireland has been named as md of Budgens and Londis based in Great Britain.

Martin Kelleher, currently md of Musgrave Wholesale Partners becomes md of SuperValu and Centra in the Republic of Ireland.

Noel Keeley, currently group human resources director, takes up the position of md for Musgrave Wholesale Partners.

Chris Martin ceo Musgrave Group said in a statement: “Throughout this recession we have continued to invest in our business and particularly our retail partners across Ireland, the UK and Spain.

"The success of that strategy has given us a platform to drive future growth in each of our markets and positions us to profitably grow the business for Musgrave and our retail partners in 2011. I would like to congratulate each of the directors on their appointments and wish them every success in their new roles.”
