Murraymania serves up berry boost

Tennis star Andy Murray’s strong performance at Wimbledon served up good news for Tesco and Scottish strawberry supplier Angus Soft Fruits (ASF), as his run appeared to give strawberry sales a boost.

The Scottish ace managed to get to the quarter finals to face Rafael Nadal.

ASF commercial director John Gray said: “Sales have been up on previous weeks and Murraymania has been a part of that - though I’m sure the better weather we’ve had recently has helped too.

“Now that Andy’s run has ended for this year, we’ll be hoping it’s not the same for strawberry sales, but hopefully a lot of people who have tried the strawberries to get into the spirit of the tennis season will come back and try them again.”

The supplier, which represents growers from Tayside, Fife, Aberdeenshire, Kincardineshire and Perthshire, supplies Tesco with Scottish strawberries from May to October.

Tesco Scottish marketing manager Angus Bell said: “Just as Andy managed to serve up some winners, consumers have been a winner with our delicious in season Scottish-grown strawberries.

“Scottish strawberries are incredibly tasty they thrive in our cooler summers where long daylight hours help them to ripen with plenty of flavour.”
