Murcia makes cheap carton plea

Choosing corrugated cartons instead of returnable plastic crates to market their fresh produce would save growers in the south-eastern Spanish region of Murcia €90 million annually. A study carried out by producer-exporters’ association Proexport claimed that the difference between using cartons and plastic crates ranged between €0.48 and €1.15 in savings per marketed crate, depending on the product. Five products were studied: broccoli, artichokes, capsicum, melons and iceberg.
