The agriculture minister at the regional executive in Murcia, Antonio Cerdá, has visited pioneering glasshouse cherry production in the region and given his support to similar projects to extend the season. “It is possible to grow cherries out of season,” said Cerdá as he visited the farm at Toli in Jumilla run by the Carrión Guardiola brothers. “Those responsible for this project have brought forward the production process by 25 days on last year.” Fruit is therefore expected to arrive on the market up to a month earlier and output from the glasshouse is forecast to reach 400 kilos. Last year prices for the fruit averaged E20 a kilo.
The regional executive was instrumental in getting glasshouse cherry production off the ground running research projects on cherry crops from the 1990s until 2009.
