Online shoppers may soon be able to filter out foreign produce at the click of a mouse if MPs’ plans for a “Buy British” button are backed by government, The Telegraph has reported.

Under the proposals online grocery retailers would add a button to their websites to allow consumers to remove items from the page that are not UK-grown.

Environment minister George Eustice revealed in a Westminster debate on the future of food labelling on 14 March that he was in discussions with the NFU about introducing the new filtering system.

The idea has been supported by MPs, who are asking the government to encourage supermarkets to launch the Buy British button, The Telegraph reported.

Supporters of the proposal, including York MP Julian Sturdy, argue it could give British farmers much needed support once the UK leaves the EU.

NFU president Meurig Raymond told The Telegraph: “From the independent surveys that the NFU has carried out over the years, we know that 86 per centof shoppers want to buy more British food, so we would welcome any move which would enable them to back British farming.”
