The most outspoken critic of the prime minister's policy on GM foods, MP Michael Meacher, has lost his environment job in the government reshuffle.

He is now expected to be a leading figure in the debate on whether to introduce commercially grown GM crops in the UK.

He said: 'The whole issue of the GM debate is very much with us. I shall now be extremely active on this. People in this country must be able to give their views.' Supporters maintain that the use of GM crops will reduce the need for pesticides and will lead to greater yields to help feed poorer countries.
